What is a Safe Haven Baby Box?
A Safe Haven Baby Box is a safe, climate-controlled bassinet built into the wall of a fire station. It allows a parent in crisis to safely, securely, and anonymously surrender their newborn. When the door is opened, a silent alarm alerts the firefighters on duty; once the baby is placed inside and the door closes, it locks, and emergency personnel are with the child within moments.
Under Texas's Safe Haven law (the “Baby Moses” law), a parent may safely and legally surrender an unharmed infant 60 days old or younger at a designated Safe Haven site — no questions asked. The Rowlett box is a designated Safe Haven surrender site under Texas Family Code §262.302. You can learn more at Safe Haven Baby Boxes (SHBB.org).

The dedication
Rowlett's baby box was dedicated on July 21, 2026 at Fire Station #1, and it exists because of the hard work of Sarah McDermott, whose determination brought the first Safe Haven Baby Box to Rowlett — together with the City of Rowlett, Rowlett Fire Rescue, and the Safe Haven Baby Boxes organization. We thank God for them, and for every neighbor who came out to stand behind this lifeline for mothers and babies in crisis.
