From the sermon Jesus, the Savior They Did Not Expect
Opening: The Road to Emmaus
On that same day two of them were going to a village named Emmaus, about seven miles from Jerusalem, and they were talking with each other about all these things that had happened. While they were talking and discussing together, Jesus himself drew near and went with them, but their eyes were kept from recognizing him. (Luke 24:13-16)
Question 1: Have you ever been so disappointed or confused that you couldn't see what God was doing right in front of you? What was that like?
When Life Doesn't Go According to Plan
The two disciples on the road had expected Jesus to overthrow Rome and set up His kingdom. Instead, He was crucified. Their hopes were shattered.
But we had hoped that he was the one to redeem Israel. (Luke 24:21a)
Question 2: Read Luke 24:17-21. What specific expectations did these disciples have about Jesus? How do our own expectations of what Jesus 'should' do sometimes set us up for disappointment?
Jesus Meets Us in Our Sadness
The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit. (Psalm 34:18)
Question 3: According to Luke 24:15-17, what does Jesus do when the disciples are sad and confused? What does this teach us about how Jesus responds to us in our lowest moments?
Misunderstanding Who Jesus Really Is
The disciples called Jesus 'a prophet' (Luke 24:19) — but He is so much more. He is King, Priest, Prophet, and Savior of the world. Their sadness grew partly from not fully understanding who He was.
Question 4: Think about how you would describe Jesus to someone who's never heard of Him. Would you emphasize what He can do for you, or who He actually is? Why does that distinction matter?
Scripture Opens Our Eyes
And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he interpreted to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning himself. (Luke 24:27)
Jesus didn't just comfort them with kind words — He took them through the Bible and showed them God's plan all along.
Question 5: Why do you think Jesus used Scripture to help them understand, rather than just revealing His identity immediately? How does studying the Bible change the way we see Jesus?
Debate & Discussion
Springboard: The disciples were so focused on their disappointment that they had 'blinders' on — they couldn't recognize Jesus even though He was walking right beside them.
Question 6: DEBATE THIS — 'Our biggest spiritual problem isn't that God is absent, but that we're too distracted or disappointed to notice Him.' Do you agree or disagree? Defend your position using examples from this passage or your own life.
Closing Reflection:
The story didn't end with disappointment. Jesus revealed Himself, and their hearts burned within them (Luke 24:32). When our expectations are shattered, Jesus meets us, teaches us, and restores our hope by showing us who He truly is.
What is one expectation of Jesus you need to surrender this week?
