Jesus Meets Us When We're Sad

Young kids (7-8) · leader guide · Anchor: Luke 24:13-35· preview

From the sermon Jesus, the Savior They Did Not Expect

Opening Question

Ask: Have you ever been really sad or disappointed because something didn't happen the way you hoped?

Leader note: Let kids share briefly (1-2 minutes). Expected answers: didn't make the team, friend moved away, pet got sick, didn't get something they wanted. If answers go off-topic (silly things like 'my toy broke'), gently redirect: 'That's hard! Today we're talking about times when we feel really disappointed or confused about something important.'

Story Time: The Road to Emmaus

Read together: Luke 24:15-16

While they were talking and discussing together, Jesus himself drew near and went with them, but their eyes were kept from recognizing him.

Explain: Two of Jesus' friends were walking on a road, feeling very sad. They thought Jesus was gone forever. They didn't understand that He had risen from the dead! But guess what? Jesus came and walked right next to them — even though they didn't recognize Him at first.

Question 2: When We're Sad

Ask: Why do you think Jesus came to walk with His friends when they were sad?

Leader note: (2-3 minutes) Expected answers: because He loves them, because He cares when we're sad, because He wanted to help them feel better. Redirect if needed: 'That's a good thought! The sermon reminded us that Jesus is near to the brokenhearted. He doesn't leave us alone when we're confused or sad.'

Key truth to share: Psalm 34:18 says, 'The Lord is near to the brokenhearted.' Jesus meets us in our sad times!

Question 3: Learning Who Jesus Really Is

Ask: The two friends thought Jesus was just a prophet (a teacher). But He is so much more! What are some true things about who Jesus is?

Leader note: (2-3 minutes) Expected answers: Savior, Son of God, King, He rose from the dead, He loves us, He died for our sins. If kids say things like 'He's nice' or 'He's in heaven,' affirm and expand: 'Yes! And He's also our Savior who died on the cross for us and came back to life!'

Key truth to share: When we understand who Jesus truly is — our risen Savior — it gives us hope even when things are hard.

Activity: Draw Your Hope

Instructions: Give each child paper and crayons. Ask them to draw a picture of something that makes them think of Jesus' love or something they can thank Jesus for — even when life is hard.

Leader note: (5 minutes) As they draw, walk around and ask what they're drawing. Encourage them: 'Jesus is always with us, even when we're sad. He never leaves us!' Let a few kids share their drawings if time allows.

Closing Prayer

Pray together: 'Dear Jesus, thank You that You are always near to us, even when we feel sad or confused. Help us to remember who You really are — our Savior who loves us and rose from the dead. When things don't go the way we hope, help us trust You. Amen.'
