Children's church (3-6) · leader guide · Anchor: Luke 24:13-17· preview

From the sermon Jesus, the Savior They Did Not Expect

Leader Notes

Duration: 5 minutes

Tone: Warm, gentle, and reassuring. Use a soft voice for the sad parts and an excited voice when Jesus appears. Sit at the children's level.

If a child gets restless: Invite them to help you do the motions. If needed, pause and ask, 'Who wants to show me how to walk?' then resume.

Anchor Scripture

While they were talking and discussing together, Jesus himself drew near and went with them... And he said to them, 'What is this conversation that you are holding with each other as you walk?' And they stood still, looking sad. — Luke 24:15, 17

Story Time: Jesus Walks With Sad Friends

Read aloud slowly:

One day, two of Jesus' friends were walking down a road. They were very, very sad because they thought Jesus was gone forever. But guess what? Jesus came and walked right next to them! He asked them, 'Why are you so sad?' Jesus is always near us when we are sad. He never leaves us alone.

Let's Walk Together! (Motion Activity)

Leader instructions: Stand up with the children. Say, 'Let's pretend we are walking down the road, just like Jesus' friends!' Walk in place slowly, then say:

  • 'Now let's walk with sad faces.' (Make an exaggerated sad face, shoulders drooped.)
  • 'Now Jesus is here! Let's walk with happy faces!' (Big smile, arms swinging.)

Repeat 2-3 times. End with happy faces.

Expected response: Children will mimic your expressions and enjoy the contrast between sad and happy.

Yes or No Question

Ask: 'Does Jesus stay with us when we are sad?'

Expected answer: Yes!

If a child says no or seems unsure: Gently say, 'The Bible tells us Jesus is always with us! Even when we're sad, He's right there. That's good news!'

Coloring Page

Say to the children: 'Now you get to draw a picture of Jesus walking with His two friends on the road. You can draw a big sun in the sky and a happy face on Jesus because He loves His friends so much!'

Leader note: Provide crayons and blank paper. Circulate and affirm each child's drawing. If a child asks what to draw, suggest simple elements: 'Draw two people and Jesus in the middle. Draw a road under their feet.'

Closing Reminder

Say: 'Remember, boys and girls: when you feel sad, Jesus is right there with you. He loves you so much! Let's say together: Jesus is with me!'

Have children repeat: 'Jesus is with me!'

Dismiss with a smile.
