From the sermon Jesus, the Savior They Did Not Expect

Imagine the scene: two heartbroken disciples, walking away from Jerusalem, and a stranger joins them. They pour out their confusion, their grief, their dashed hopes. And then He does something remarkable. Beginning with Moses and all the prophets, He interpreted to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning Himself.

Jesus didn't just comfort them. He taught them. He took them back to the Word. From Genesis to Malachi, He showed them that the cross wasn't Plan B. It was always the plan. The suffering, the death, the resurrection—it was all there, woven through the entire story of Scripture. They had been reading the Bible their whole lives, but they had missed the point. They had missed Him.

That's what the Word does. It reveals Jesus. Not just facts about Him, but Him—His character, His mission, His heart. And when we read Scripture rightly, when we see Him on every page, something shifts inside us. Confusion gives way to clarity. Disappointment gives way to worship. Our hearts burn within us.

If you want to know who Jesus really is, don't start with your expectations. Start with His Word. Let Scripture shape your understanding. Let it correct your assumptions. Let it show you the Jesus you didn't expect—the one who's better, truer, more faithful than you imagined.

The whole Bible is about Him. And the more you see that, the more your heart will burn.

Pause and consider

When you read the Bible, are you looking for Jesus, or just looking for answers? How might your reading change if you approached it as a revelation of Him?

Prayer

Lord, open the Scriptures to me. Help me see You on every page. Correct my misunderstandings. Shape my expectations by Your Word, not by my assumptions. Make my heart burn with love for You.
