From the sermon Jesus, the Savior They Did Not Expect
It happened at the table. Jesus took the bread, blessed it, broke it, gave it to them. And suddenly, their eyes were opened. They recognized Him. And just as quickly, He vanished.
But something had changed. They had gone from confusion to clarity, from disappointment to joy, from walking away to running back. What made the difference? They encountered Jesus—not just as an idea, not just as a memory, but as the living, risen Lord. And once they saw Him, they couldn't stay silent.
That's what happens when Jesus reveals Himself. You can't keep it to yourself. The disciples didn't wait until morning. They didn't finish their meal. They got up that very hour and went back to Jerusalem to tell the others: 'The Lord has risen indeed!' Their disappointment had turned to proclamation.
That's the trajectory of every believer's story. We start in confusion, in brokenness, in sin. And then Jesus opens our eyes. He pulls us out of the pit, sets our feet on solid ground, and puts a new song in our mouths. And once that happens, we can't help but tell others.
Maybe you're in the confusion stage right now. Maybe your eyes are still clouded by disappointment. But don't lose heart. Jesus is in the business of opening blind eyes. And when He does, you'll move from silence to song, from despair to declaration. You'll run back to tell others what He's done.
Pause and consider
Has there been a moment when your eyes were opened to who Jesus really is? How did it change you? If you're still waiting for that clarity, ask Him for it today.
Prayer
Jesus, open my eyes. Let me see You as You truly are—risen, alive, present. And when You do, give me the courage to tell others. Turn my disappointment into proclamation, my confusion into clarity, my silence into song.
