From the sermon Extremes to Avoid Sin
Story Time: The Helper Inside
'If your hand or your foot causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to enter life crippled or lame than with two hands or two feet to be thrown into the eternal fire. And if your eye causes you to sin, tear it out and throw it away. It is better for you to enter life with one eye than with two eyes to be thrown into the hell of fire.' — Matthew 18:8-9
Jesus told us that bad choices are very, very serious. He said we should do whatever it takes to choose good things instead of bad things. But guess what? We can't fix our hearts all by ourselves. We need God's help! When we ask Jesus to live in our hearts, He sends the Holy Spirit to help us say no to bad things and yes to good things. God is our special Helper who makes us more like Jesus every day.
Let's Move!
Let's do some motions together:
- Point to your heart and say, 'God lives here!'
- Make a stop sign with your hand and say, 'No to bad choices!'
- Give yourself a big hug and say, 'God helps me!'
Now let's sing this little song to the tune of 'Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star':
God helps me to choose what's right, He's with me both day and night, When I want to do what's bad, God can help me, I am glad, God helps me to choose what's right, He's with me both day and night!
Think About It
Can God help you say no to bad things?
(Yes!)
Draw a Picture
Draw a picture of yourself with a big heart. Inside the heart, draw a cross to show that Jesus lives in your heart and helps you choose good things!
