God Helps Us Say No to Sin

Children's church (3-6) · leader guide · Anchor: Matthew 18:8-9· preview

From the sermon Extremes to Avoid Sin

Leader Notes

Duration: 5 minutes

Tone: Warm, gentle, reassuring. Use a calm storytelling voice. Emphasize that God helps us when we make mistakes and that we can ask Him for help.

If a child gets restless: Pause the story, do the motion activity again, or invite them to stand and stretch. Keep the session short and interactive.

Anchor Scripture

'If your hand or your foot causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to enter life crippled or lame than with two hands or two feet to be thrown into the eternal fire. And if your eye causes you to sin, tear it out and throw it away. It is better for you to enter life with one eye than with two eyes to be thrown into the hell of fire.' — Matthew 18:8-9

Leader note: You won't read this passage aloud to the children. It's the anchor for your teaching. The story below simplifies the idea: sin is serious, and we need God's help to say no.

Story Time: 'Saying No to Bad Choices'

Read aloud slowly:

Jesus told His friends that saying no to bad choices is very, very important. Sometimes we want to do something we shouldn't — like being mean or taking something that isn't ours. Jesus said we should do whatever it takes to say no to those bad choices, because God loves us and wants us to be happy and safe. The good news is, we don't have to do it alone! God helps us. When we ask Him, He gives us the power to choose what is right.

Leader note: Pause after reading. Smile and make eye contact with the children.

Motion Activity: 'Stop and Pray'

Say to the children:

Let's practice what we do when we feel like making a bad choice. When I say 'Stop!' you put your hand up like a stop sign. Then we fold our hands and say, 'God, help me!'

Ready? Let's try it!

Do the motion together 2-3 times:

  1. Hold up one hand like a stop sign.
  2. Fold hands together.
  3. Say together: 'God, help me!'

Leader note: Make it playful. Celebrate their participation. If a child is shy, that's okay — they can watch.

Simple Question

Ask:

Does God help us say no to bad choices?

Expected answer: Yes!

Leader note: Nod enthusiastically when they answer. If a child says 'no' or seems confused, gently say, 'Yes, He does! God is always ready to help us when we ask Him.'

Coloring Page Prompt

Say to the children:

Now you get to draw a picture! Draw yourself praying and asking God to help you make good choices. You can draw your hands folded or you talking to God.

Leader note: Provide crayons and blank paper. Circulate and encourage them. Ask simple questions like, 'Who are you talking to in your picture?' to reinforce the lesson.

Closing Prayer (Leader prays aloud)

'Dear God, thank You for loving us. Thank You for helping us say no to bad choices. We know we can ask You anytime, and You will help us. Amen.'

Leader note: Keep the prayer short and simple. Invite children to say 'Amen' with you.
