Living in a Woeful World

Wednesday · Anchor: Matt.18.7

From the sermon Extremes to Avoid Sin

Jesus doesn't sugarcoat reality. 'Woe to the world for temptations to sin, for it is necessary that temptations come.' We live in a fallen world. Sin is everywhere — in the headlines, in our neighborhoods, in our own hearts. It's inescapable this side of glory.

Sometimes we think our generation has it worse than any before. The internet. The moral chaos. The relentless noise. But the truth is, there's nothing new under the sun. Every generation has faced its own brand of brokenness. Every era has had its own temptations.

What Jesus is saying is this: don't be surprised. The world is a dangerous place. Spiritually dangerous. You will be confronted with stumbling blocks. You will face enticements to sin. That's the nature of living in a world that's in rebellion against God.

But here's the hope: you're not alone in it. Jesus walked through this same world. He faced every temptation we face — and never once gave in. He knows what it's like to be weary, to be misunderstood, to be lured toward shortcuts and compromises. And He overcame.

Now He walks with us. The same Spirit that raised Him from the dead lives in us. We're not left to white-knuckle our way through temptation. We have divine help. We have a Savior who sympathizes with our weaknesses and offers grace in our time of need.

Yes, the world is woeful. But we serve a God who has overcome the world. And in Him, so do we.

Pause and consider

What temptations feel inescapable in your life right now? Have you asked Jesus to walk with you through them?

Prayer

Father, this world is hard. Temptation is everywhere, and I feel weak. Thank You that I don't have to face it alone. Thank You for Jesus, who knows what it's like and who gives me strength. Help me to lean on You today.
