Whatever It Takes

Thursday · Anchor: Matt.18.8-9

From the sermon Extremes to Avoid Sin

Jesus uses shocking language to make a point: 'If your hand causes you to sin, cut it off. If your eye causes you to sin, tear it out.' He's not calling for self-mutilation — He's calling for radical obedience. He's saying: do whatever it takes to fight sin. No half measures. No excuses.

We live in a culture of convenience. We want transformation without disruption. We want holiness without sacrifice. But Jesus won't let us have it both ways. Sin is serious. Hell is real. And the stakes are too high to play games.

What does 'whatever it takes' look like in your life? Maybe it means canceling the streaming service that's feeding your mind garbage. Maybe it means changing your route to work so you don't drive past the place that tempts you. Maybe it means ending a friendship that's pulling you away from Christ. Maybe it means quitting a job that's compromising your integrity.

Those sound extreme. They are extreme. That's the point. Sin is that serious. It's that destructive. It's worth any cost to avoid it.

But here's the thing: you can cut off every hand and gouge out every eye, and you'll still have a sin problem. Because the real issue isn't your body — it's your heart. And only God can change that.

So yes, take drastic measures. Remove the opportunities. Eliminate the temptations. But don't stop there. Cry out for a new heart. Ask God to change your desires. Depend on His Spirit to do what you can't do on your own.

That's the only way forward.

Pause and consider

What extreme measure is God calling you to take in your fight against sin? What's holding you back?

Prayer

Lord, I confess I've been playing it safe. I've been making excuses. Show me what needs to go. Give me the courage to do whatever it takes. And more than that, change my heart. Make me new from the inside out.
