The Least of These

Thursday · Anchor: Matt.25.40

From the sermon Treatment of Disciples

Jesus' words in Matthew 25 are haunting: 'As you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me.' He's not talking about generic charity. He's talking about how we treat His people — especially the ones who seem least important.

Who are 'the least of these' in your life? Maybe it's the single mom who always seems frazzled. Maybe it's the elderly man who talks too long. Maybe it's the teenager who doesn't fit in. Maybe it's the immigrant family still learning English. Maybe it's the person battling addiction, or depression, or doubt.

Jesus says: when you feed them, you feed Me. When you visit them, you visit Me. When you clothe them, you clothe Me. And — here's the sobering part — when you ignore them, you ignore Me.

This isn't about earning salvation. It's about what salvation produces. If we have truly encountered the King, we will care about His people. Not because it's a good deed, but because they matter to Him.

The challenge is that 'the least of these' are often inconvenient. They need things at bad times. They don't have much to offer in return. They slow us down. But that's precisely the point. The Kingdom isn't built on efficiency or mutual benefit. It's built on love — the kind of love that sees Jesus in the face of the forgotten.

This week, look for 'the least of these' in your world. And when you find them, serve them as you would serve Christ.

Pause and consider

Who are 'the least of these' in your immediate context? What is one tangible way you can serve them this week?

Prayer

Lord Jesus, forgive me for the times I've walked past You in the faces of the forgotten. Give me eyes to see and a heart to serve. Help me to love the least as You have loved me. Amen.
