From the sermon Marks of a Dangerous Church

Opening: What Makes a Church 'Dangerous'?

And he gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the shepherds and teachers, to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ, until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to mature manhood, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ, so that we may no longer be children, tossed to and fro by the waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by human cunning, by craftiness in deceitful schemes. Rather, speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ, from whom the whole body, joined and held together by every joint with which it is equipped, when each part is working properly, makes the body grow so that it builds itself up in love. (Ephesians 4:11–16)

Question 1: Leaders Who Equip

According to verse 11–12, what is the primary job of church leaders (pastors, teachers, etc.)? How is that different from doing all the ministry themselves?

Cross-reference: 1 Peter 4:10 — As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God's varied grace.

Question 2: Your Part in the Body

Paul says in verse 16 that the body grows 'when each part is working properly.' Read 1 Corinthians 12:7, 18. What does it mean that God arranged you in this church body 'as he chose'? What gifts or abilities do you bring — even if they seem small?

Question 3: Maturity vs. Childishness

Verse 14 warns against being 'tossed to and fro by the waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine.' What are some 'winds of doctrine' (false teachings, trends, or peer pressure) that teenagers face today? How does growing in knowledge of Christ (v. 13) protect you?

Cross-reference: Acts 17 (the Bereans examined the Scriptures daily)

Question 4: Unity in the Church

Look back at Ephesians 4:2–3. Paul urges 'humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love, eager to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.' Why is unity so critical to being a 'dangerous' (effective) church? What threatens unity in a youth group or congregation?

Cross-reference: John 13:34–35 — A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another… By this all people will know that you are my disciples.

Question 5: Truth AND Love — Never Compromise Either

Verse 15 says, 'speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ.' Why is it tempting to choose one over the other (either brutal honesty without love, or fake niceness that avoids truth)? Give an example of what 'truth in love' looks like in real life.

Cross-reference: Galatians 4:16 — Have I then become your enemy by telling you the truth?

Debate / Discussion Springboard

Scenario: Your friend says, 'I love Jesus, but I don't need the church. I can grow on my own with my Bible and worship music.'

Based on Ephesians 4:11–16, how would you respond? Is individual faith enough, or does God design us to need the body? Discuss both sides, then decide: can you be a 'dangerous Christian' without being part of a 'dangerous church'?

Cross-reference: Hebrews 13:17 — Obey your leaders and submit to them, for they are keeping watch over your souls.
