What Does Humble Really Mean?

Early childhood (9-12) · member guide · Anchor: Matthew 18:1-6· preview

From the sermon Great or Humble?

Question 1: What Did the Disciples Want to Know?

Read Matthew 18:1-4 again. The disciples asked Jesus, 'Who is the greatest in the Kingdom of heaven?' What do you think they were hoping Jesus would say? Have you ever wanted to be the best at something — sports, grades, video games? What does Jesus' answer teach us about what 'great' really means in God's eyes?

Question 2: How Are Kids Like… Kids?

Jesus said we need to become like children to enter the Kingdom of heaven. He wasn't talking about acting immature or silly. Think about how a four-year-old depends on her parents for food, a place to live, and safety. She can't grill her own hot dog or drive to the store. How is trusting God like that? What are some things you depend on God for every single day?

Question 3: What Does Humility Look Like in Real Life?

Jesus said, 'Whoever humbles himself like this child is the greatest in the Kingdom of heaven.' Humility means recognizing we need God and others — we can't do everything on our own. Can you think of a time this week when you could choose humility instead of pride? (Maybe admitting you don't know something, asking for help, or letting someone else go first.)

Question 4: Who Is Your Example?

The sermon mentioned that Jesus is our example of humility. Read Philippians 2:5-8. Jesus left heaven, became human, and died on a cross for us. He didn't demand to be served — He came to serve. How can you follow Jesus' example at home, at school, or with your friends this week?

Question 5: Why Does Greatness Look Different in God's Kingdom?

In the world, people think greatness means being the strongest, richest, or most popular. But Jesus taught that greatness in God's Kingdom comes through humility and serving others. Why do you think God values humility so much? How does depending on God (like a child depends on a parent) make us truly great in His eyes?
