Secure Enough to Serve
Tuesday · Anchor: John.13.14
From the sermon Great or Humble?
Jesus knew where He came from. He knew where He was going. And because He knew, He could pick up a towel.
That's the hinge of the story in John 13. Before Jesus washes anyone's feet, the text pauses to remind us: He knew the Father had given Him all things. He knew He had come from God and was returning to God. Secure in His identity, He was free to serve.
Most of us struggle to serve because we're not sure who we are. We're afraid that if we stoop too low, people will think less of us. We're worried that serving will somehow diminish our standing, our reputation, our value. So we hold back. We wait for recognition. We serve only when it's convenient or visible.
But Jesus shows us another way. When you know whose you are — when you're anchored in the Father's love, when your identity is settled — you're free to serve anyone, anywhere, without fear. You don't need the applause. You don't need the thank-you. You're not serving to prove anything. You're serving because you're secure.
The disciples didn't understand it at first. Peter recoiled. *You shall never wash my feet.* But Jesus was modeling something they'd spend the rest of their lives learning: greatness in the Kingdom looks like a towel and a basin.
Today, you'll have opportunities to serve. Some will be small. Some will go unnoticed. The question isn't whether you're capable. The question is whether you're secure enough in the Father's love to pick up the towel.
Pause and consider
What keeps you from serving freely? Is it fear of being overlooked, or uncertainty about your worth? How does knowing you're loved by the Father change the way you serve?
Prayer
Lord Jesus, You knew who You were, and so You served without hesitation. Help me to find my security in You, not in the approval of others. Free me to serve with joy, knowing I am Yours. Amen.
