When Offense Is Necessary

Wednesday · Anchor: Matt.15.7

From the sermon Tax Time!

Not all offense is avoidable. Not all conflict is wrong. Jesus knew this better than anyone.

In Matthew 15, the Pharisees confronted Him about ceremonial hand-washing. His disciples weren't following the traditions. The religious leaders were scandalized. And Jesus? He didn't apologize. He didn't accommodate. He called them hypocrites and exposed how their man-made rules had nullified the Word of God.

When the disciples later told Him the Pharisees were offended, He didn't flinch. He said, in effect, 'Let them be offended. They're blind guides leading the blind.'

So how do we reconcile this with the temple tax story? How do we know when to accommodate and when to confront?

The difference is truth. When the issue touches the gospel, the character of God, or the clarity of Scripture, we don't budge. We don't soften. We don't accommodate error for the sake of keeping the peace. Love doesn't require us to call lies truth or to smile while someone distorts the Word of God.

But when the issue is a matter of custom, preference, or secondary concern — when it's not about truth but about tradition — that's when we have room to yield. That's when love calls us to lay down our rights.

The challenge is discernment. And discernment requires intimacy with God, knowledge of His Word, and the courage to stand when standing is required — even if it costs us.

Jesus offended the Pharisees because their teaching was leading people away from God. He accommodated the tax collectors because the issue was incidental. He knew the difference. And by His Spirit, so can we.

Pause and consider

Is there an area where you've been too quick to accommodate error, or too quick to fight over something that doesn't matter? Ask God for discernment.

Prayer

Father, give me courage to stand for truth and wisdom to know when to yield. Help me never compromise the gospel, but also never pick fights that don't matter. Make me bold where boldness is needed, and gentle where gentleness serves Your kingdom.
